AEO vs SEO vs GEO: What's the Difference?

    · Clover Group Solutions

If you've spent any time researching AI search lately, you've run into a wall of overlapping acronyms: SEO, AEO, GEO, AI SEO, Answer Engine Optimization. Some agencies use these interchangeably. Some use them to describe genuinely different things. Here's the actual breakdown, in plain terms.

    The Quick Answer

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) gets your business ranked on a traditional results page: the ten blue links on Google.

AEO (AI Engine Optimization, also called Answer Engine Optimization) gets your business named inside an AI-generated answer: the single recommendation ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini gives when someone asks a question.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a newer, broader term some agencies use as a synonym for AEO. In practice, most agencies using "GEO" and most agencies using "AEO" are describing the same underlying work: making a business visible and citable inside AI-generated responses. The term hasn't fully standardized industry-wide yet; if an agency draws a hard technical distinction between the two, ask them to be specific about what that distinction actually is in practice.

    Why the Confusion Happens

Two things make this genuinely confusing, even for people paying close attention:

The disciplines share raw materials. Both SEO and AEO use content, backlinks, and structured data. That overlap makes it easy for an agency to describe AEO as "SEO plus AI", technically not wrong about the shared inputs, but misleading about the goal. Using the same tools for a different job doesn't make it the same job.

The terminology is still settling. AEO, GEO, and AI SEO all emerged within roughly the same window as AI assistants became a real discovery channel. Different agencies adopted different terms before any of them became standard, which is why you'll see all three used to describe substantially similar work.

    Do You Need Both?

This is the question that actually matters, and the honest answer is: it depends on how directly the two disciplines are combined, not whether you're aware of both.

Because SEO and AEO share raw materials (content, backlinks, structured data); technical and content work done well for one often benefits the other. A business with strong topical authority and clean entity data tends to perform better on Google and get cited more often by AI systems, almost as a byproduct.

But that's different from paying for two separate, stacked services that duplicate effort and cost. If you're evaluating a package that combines both, ask specifically what's shared and what's duplicated: a well-run AEO engagement should already be reinforcing your traditional search visibility as part of its normal work, not requiring a second, separate SEO retainer on top to get that benefit.

    The One-Sentence Version

SEO gets you found. AEO gets you recommended. They use some of the same tools, but they're built for different moments in a customer's decision, and increasingly, the second moment is happening before the first one ever does.
