Ranking #1 doesn't mean what it used to. Google AI Overviews now sit above the traditional results for a large and growing share of searches, and the data on what that does to click-through rates should change how any local business thinks about search visibility.
The Number That Matters
Independent research from Ahrefs found that when a Google AI Overview appears above the #1 organic search result, the click-through rate for that #1 result drops by 58%. That's not a ranking penalty (the page is still #1); it's an attention penalty. The AI-generated summary answers the question directly, and a large share of searchers never scroll down to click anything at all.
This is often called "zero-click search," and it's not a fringe phenomenon anymore. It's the default experience for a growing number of everyday queries, especially informational ones and increasingly, local and commercial ones too.
Why This Happens
An AI Overview is built to give a complete, confident answer in the space above the fold. If it succeeds, there's less reason for someone to click through to a website to get the same information. The businesses that lose the most traffic in this shift are the ones whose entire visibility strategy depended on winning a click, because winning the click is worth less than it used to be, no matter how well the page ranks.
The Piece Most Businesses Miss
Here's the part that changes the strategy entirely: an AI Overview has to get its information from somewhere. It's citing and summarizing sources, and those citations are visible, and clickable. A business that's cited inside the AI Overview is in a fundamentally different position than a business that's ranked #4 underneath it. One gets seen as part of the answer. The other gets skipped entirely.
That's the actual objective of AEO: not just showing up on the page, but being one of the sources the AI Overview (or ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini) chooses to cite when it builds its answer. See the complete AEO guide for how that's done technically.
The Traffic That Does Come Through Converts Better
The click-through rate drop is real, but it's not the whole picture. Independent industry research (Conductor/Semrush AEO Benchmarks Report; Seer Interactive multi-vertical study) found that AI-referred website traffic converts at 8% to 20%, compared to 2% to 5% for paid search advertising; AI-referred visitors convert at 4.4 times the rate of standard organic search visitors and spend 68% more time on a website than visitors from paid search ads. Fewer people are clicking overall, but the ones an AI system does send tend to arrive more qualified and more ready to act, because they came from a specific recommendation rather than a generic link.
What To Actually Do About It
- Stop measuring visibility by rank position alone. A #1 ranking that gets skipped by an AI Overview isn't delivering the value it used to. Track whether the business is actually showing up inside AI-generated answers, not just where it sits on the page. How to Measure AI Visibility covers the specific KPIs for this.
- Build the content and authority signals AI systems need to cite a source, not just the signals that used to win a ranking position, see the complete AEO guide for what that involves.
- Don't abandon traditional SEO. Local SEO and AEO overlap and reinforce each other; see Local SEO vs AEO for how to think about running both.
