Local SEO vs AEO: Do You Need Both?

    · Clover Group Solutions

"Do I need Local SEO or AEO?" is the wrong question for most businesses; the right question is which one to prioritize first, because most will eventually need both. Here's the actual difference, where they overlap, and how to decide where your budget goes first.

    What Local SEO Actually Does

Local SEO is the work that gets a business found in Google's map pack, local organic results, and "near me" searches, optimizing a Google Business Profile, building local citations, generating reviews, and targeting location-specific keywords. The goal is a ranking position: showing up in the top three map pack results or the first page of local organic listings when someone searches "plumber near me" or "best dentist in [city]."

Local SEO has been the standard playbook for local businesses for over a decade, and it still matters: most people who search with local intent are still looking at a map or a list of links.

    What AEO Actually Does

AEO (AI Engine Optimization) is a different objective: getting a business named directly inside an AI-generated answer from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or Gemini, independent of where that business ranks on a traditional results page. See the complete AEO guide for the full breakdown, but the short version is that AEO cares less about position on a page and more about whether an AI system trusts a business enough to recommend it by name.

    Where They Overlap

Local SEO and AEO share raw materials. A consistent, accurate Google Business Profile, clean NAP (name/address/phone) data across directories, a steady flow of recent reviews, and basic schema markup all feed both. If a business has never done any local optimization, the first few steps of Local SEO and the foundational steps of AEO look nearly identical.

    Where They Diverge

Past that foundation, the two disciplines pull apart. Local SEO optimizes for a results page a human scrolls through and clicks. AEO optimizes for a system that reads the page, extracts a fact or a recommendation, and repeats it in a generated answer, which means it depends much more heavily on content structure, specific and checkable claims, and third-party authority signals that build AI trust in the entity. A business can rank #1 in the map pack and still never get mentioned by ChatGPT, because ranking #1 and being a trustworthy, citable source aren't the same achievement. For the fuller technical comparison, including GEO, see the AEO vs SEO vs GEO comparison guide.

Why This Is Becoming Less Optional

Search behavior is shifting toward AI-generated answers, and that shift changes what a #1 ranking is even worth. Independent research from Ahrefs found that when a Google AI Overview appears above the #1 organic result, the click-through rate for that #1 result drops by 58%. Ranking well and getting clicked are no longer the same thing, which is exactly the gap AEO is built to close. (More on this in How AI Overviews Are Cutting Click-Through Rates.)

    So Which One First?

    • If a business has weak or inconsistent local fundamentals (no claimed Google Business Profile, inconsistent listings, few reviews), start with Local SEO fundamentals; AEO will be building on a shaky foundation otherwise.
    • If the fundamentals are already solid and the business wants to show up where more of its future customers are already asking questions, AEO is the higher-leverage next investment.
    • If budget allows for both, running them together is the strongest position: Local SEO keeps the map pack and organic listings performing while AEO builds the AI-citation layer on top of the same foundation.
